Einigen Gelehrten zufolge soll es aus der gleichnamigen lombardischen Stadt stammen und von dort aus um 1429 nach Genua gezogen sein. Es gibt jedoch Hinweise darauf, dass die Bergamos schon lange zuvor in der heutigen ligurischen Hauptstadt präsent waren und unter anderem einen Giovanni de Bergamo fanden , ein genuesischer Bürger im Jahr 1222, am 22. November. Andere Gelehrte hingegen glauben, dass die Familie von der griechischen Insel Chia stammte, von wo aus sie jedoch mit größerer Wahrscheinlichkeit aus kommerziellen Gründen von Genua aus umzog. Wir können daher den Schluss ziehen, dass die Bergamos ihren Namen von der Herkunftsstadt erhielten und dass sie zwischen dem 13. und 15. Jahrhundert mehrmals nach Genua zogen, um ihren Handel auszuweiten.
