Nobility crown BergamoIllustrious and ancient Genoese family, of clear and ancestral virtue, which has spread over the centuries in various regions of Italy. According to some scholars it would have originated from the Lombard city of the same name from whence it would have moved to Genoa around 1429. However there is evidence that the Bergamos were present in today's Ligurian capital well before, finding among others a Giovanni de Bergamo, a Genoese citizen in 1222, on the 22nd day of November. Other scholars, on the other hand, believe that the family originated from the Greek island of Chia whence, however, with greater probability, they moved for commercial reasons starting from Genoa itself. We can therefore conclude that the Bergamos took their name from the city of origin and that on several occasions they passed to Genoa between the thirteenth and fifteenth centuries, to expand their trade. In fact, the family owes its fortune to the skill demonstrated in the practice of the art of silk; in fact, it had several real estate properties in the vicinity of the Pammatone hospital, where there were many dye works and textile artisan workshops. In 1528 three representatives of the family were ascribed to the Liber Civilitatis, Cosmo, Stefano and Francesco de Bergamo.
