Antica ed assai nobile famiglia del Regno di Napoli, di chiara ed avita virtù, propagatasi, nel corso dei secoli, in diverse regioni d'Italia. Essa fu creata nobile nel XVI secolo, nello specifico con diploma del 9 dicembre 1586 di re Filippo II di Spagna, dato a Giovan Leonardo Mascia. Nel 1847 e nel 1853 fu poi questa famiglia ammessa nelle Regie Guardie del Corpo e riconosciuta di nobiltà generosa dalla Real Commissione dei Titoli di Nobiltà delle Due Sicilie (1834-1860). Essa possedette inoltre numerose terre e pregevolissimi nobiliari palazzi, tra cui Palazzo Mascia in Montefusco e Palazzo Mascia in San Severo.
