Originariamente noto come Zanchi, essendo originario di Grumello de' Zanchi, piccolo territorio nel territorio tra Zogno e Poscante in Val Brembana, il cognome in Veneto veniva spesso trascritto come Zanghi. Questa illustre Casata possedeva terre e castelli nel bergamasco, con il titolo di Conte, poi riconosciuto dalla Repubblica di Venezia. Annovera tra i suoi maggiori esponenti: canonici, vescovi e cavalieri dell'Ordine Gerosolimitano. Giovan Grisostomo, canonico lateranense, discreto studioso, morì nel 1556 a Bergamo. Altri sacerdoti furono: Bernardino (1534), Gerardo (1535) e Marco Antonio (1587). Paolo, cavaliere Gerosolimite, combatté all'assedio di Vercelli e di La Rochelle in Francia.
