Originalmente conhecido como Zanchi, sendo originário de Grumello de' Zanchi, uma pequena terra no território entre Zogno e Poscante no vale de Brembana, o nome da família no Vêneto era frequentemente transcrito como Zanghi. Esta ilustre Casa possuía terras e castelos na área de Bérgamo, com o título de Conde, que mais tarde foi reconhecido pela República de Veneza.
