BRAINA

Braina is specific to Ozieri in the Sassari area. additions provided by Giuseppe Concas BRAINA: in northern Logudorese it means puddle, marsh and derives from the ancient Tuscan braina. It is a rare surname, present in 18 Italian Municipalities, of which 9 in Sardinia: Ozieri 30, Cagliari 8, Arbus 6, etc. It is not present in the ancient maps we consulted. We think it is a surname arrived in Sardinia with the Tuscan cork cutters and charcoal burners towards the second half of the XIXth century. For the moment we have no other suggestions.
