A hypothesis on the origin of the surname refers to the fact that Strabo historian and Greek geographer (63 BC - 19 AD), writes that, in order to repopulate after the expulsion of the Gauls the territory from Lake Como to the river Adda, the Romans have transferred in that area a certain number of Greeks from the island of Calchi (Colcide) of the Aegean Sea.
