Carmine is specific to Verbano, Cannobbio and Cannero Riviera area (VB), it has a nucleus, probably not secondary, in the Milanese area, Di Carmine instead has a stock between Piceno, Teramo and Pescara and one in the Roman area, they should derive from place names characterized by the presence of churches, chapels or monasteries dedicated to the Madonna del Carmine, or by toponyms like Carmine di Cannobbio (VB), Carmine di Ripatransone (AP), Villa Carmine in the Pescara area and many others .. additions provided by Juan Manuel Carmine The surname it originates from the baptismal name Carmine, which represents a variant of Carmel, from Mount Carmel in Palestine. In fact, Mount Carmel is a promontory that extends from the Gulf of Haifa, on the Mediterranean, to the plain of Esdrelon, in the land of Jesus. After the year 1000, some pilgrims and soldiers of the crusades remained on Mount Carmel to live how the prophet Elias lived, and they built a small church dedicated to the Virgin Mary. Towards 1150 they finally organized themselves into a common life and there were some Carmelite monasteries which, with the return of the Crusaders, multiplied also in the West and precisely in Sicily and England. Then numerous churches were born, named after the Madonna del Carmine (or Carmelo). Probably the name spread throughout Italy reaching Piedmont, where it became the name of a town (Carmine di Cannobio) and later also a surname.
