FARRUGGIA | FARRUGGIO | FARRUGIA

All typical of Sicily, in particular in Agrigento, are of Maltese origin and should derive from a nickname originated from the Arabic word farrug or farrudja (pollastro), we find traces of this surname in Malta in 1400 in an act: "... Nos Manfreddus Axach Judex annalis curie Civilis Civitatis Malta and Laurentius Farrugius Civitatis et Insularum Maltae et Gaudisii et Reginalis Cammare publicus notarius et testes subscripti ..: ". additions provided by Giovanni Vezzelli Farruggio is another form of the Sicilian surname Ferruggia that comes from the Calabrian voice 'ferrùggia' = ferula (ed. Bacchetta once used to punish schoolchildren).
