MUCEDOLA | MUSCETTOLA

Mucedola is specific to San Severo in the Foggia area, it should be an altered form of the surname Muscettola, which is specific to Manfredonia and San Nicandro Garganico and Monte Sant'Angelo also in the Foggia area, and which should derive from a nickname originating from the archaic dialectal term muscettola (chaffinch), while another hypothesis would like it derived from a further diminutive form of the marinaresco term muscello (braid of hemp filacci used in ancient times for temporary ligatures), thus attributing an almost disparaging value to the nickname, a last hypothesis would like it instead arrived in Italy in the wake of the Angevins as an alteration of the French surname Mouchet.
