Paone is typical of the centrosud, of Lazio, Campania, Calabria and Sicily, Paoni is from central Italy, perhaps from Terni, they should derive from the medieval name Paonus of which we have an example a pavia in a Cartula venditionis, investiture et refutationis of the year 1153 : "... a cum noticia propinquorum parentum meorum, id sunt Paonus et Rainardus propinqui mei, in corum presencia et testium certam facio profesionem quod nullam me pati violencia ...", but could also in some cases derive from nicknames originated from the word peacock, through dialectal variations, perhaps to indicate vain attitudes of the progenitor.
