SAIU

Saiu is typically Sardinian, with a strain between Cagliari and Iglesiente and one in Sassarese. Additions provided by Giuseppe Concas SAIU: saìu or salìu = salty. It derives from the Latin sal, Salis in the meaning of salt and figuratively of intelligence, prudence or even cunning. It has salt in pumpkin = tenit salts in Conca. Salìu = salty in its own sense, intelligent, cunning, prudent in figuratively. We didn't find it in the old cards, evidently this is a recent surname. In the ancient documents of the Sardinian language we find Sàbiu, but different meaning and etymon (see SÀBIU). Currently the surname is present in 113 municipalities of the national territory, of which 47 in Sardinia, concentrated for the most part in the Iglesiente and Medio Campidano, with the exception of Alghero: Villacidro 112, Alghero 70, Iglesias 64, Carbonia 61, Domusnovas 46, Gonnosfanadiga 37, etc. In the peninsula is Rome to have the highest number with 35.
