ALDEBRANDI | ALDOBRANDI | ALDOVRANDI | ALDROVANDI | ALTEBRANDI | ALTEBRANDO | ALTOBRANDO

Aldebrandi, absolutely rare, would seem to be Tuscan, Aldobrandi and Aldovrandi, equally rare, would seem to be Florentine, Aldrovandi is very common in Emilia in the Reggio, Modena and Bologna areas, in Mantua and in Florence, Altebrandi is almost unique, Altebrando and Altobrando would seem Lombard all derive directly or through modifications from the medieval name Aldobrandus or Aldevrandus of which we have an example in dominus Aldobrandus de Cerreto (Porte Domus) which is one of the six Priors of Florence in the period from 15 June to 14 August of the year 1283, name originated from the merger of two Longobard words alda (essay) and branda (sword) or from a Germanic alt (ancient, old) and brand (sword) the original name would therefore have had the meaning of wise sword or ancient sword. The surname, which is found almost exclusively in northern Italy, initially had noble origins, it may have been the identifier of Arimanni Longobardi, which later became a household name.
