Bampa is typical of the Veneto, of the Treviso area and of the Verona area and in particular of San Giovanni Lupatoto (VR), Bampi is typical of Trentino Alto Adige and in particular of Civezzano (TN), it could derive from the toponym Bampi, a hamlet of Civezzano (TN), traces of this surname we find in the 1600s in the countryside of Conegliano (TV), in a writing of 1631 we read: "... some houses of the gentlemen Bampi in the village of S. Maria outside the Porta Altilia ...". additions provided by Franco Bampi .francobampi.it The surname Bampa should derive from a modification of the term vampa or vampo to indicate a high and impetuous flame, but a document would seem to endorse the thesis that the surname Bampi derives from the name of a fraction: "Running the year 1554 on the day of Tuesday 19 July, the month of November at the Bampi, in the stove of the infrascict R. Mr. Testatore, in the presence etc. Ivi personally constituted, and on a bed of walnut lying MR Mr. D. Antonio fq Francesco Bampi of the Villa dei Bampi, district of Civezzano ... ", this surname has therefore been present in Civezzano since at least 1500. A famous character was the poet priest Francesco Bampi, also from Civezzano. It is curious to note that the documents of 1816 report many Bampa, while in 1846 the Bampa are a few units while there are numerous Bampi. In the past, surnames were more dancers than now (for example, they declined), but something must have happened in that period if almost all the Bampas turned into Bampi. I can assume that the Bampi form came into common use and that at a certain point this was made official.
