CAON

Caon is typically Venetian, particularly present in the Treviso area in Resana, Castelfranco Veneto and Loria, in the Paduan area at Villa del Conte, Campo San Martino. San Giorgio delle Pertiche and Santa Giustina in Colle, with a stock also in Venice and in the Roman Gallicano Sabina, probably the result of Venetian emigration for the reclamation of the Pontine Marshes, should derive from a Venetian dialect nickname based on the increase of the dialectal term cao (chief, head, capoccia, who commands), probably with the meaning of capoccione, perhaps even simply because the founders were endowed with a particularly large head.
