CARAMASCHI

Mantuan surname, should derive from a nickname linked to a place name. additions provided by Alfredo Calendi From studies I made which resulted in the publication "the dynasty of the Caramaschi", 2007), it appears that the first Caramaschi to carry this surname was Giulio (born in 1620 in Pieve di Guastalla), son of Battistino Cremaschi. The change of surname took place due to the passage from Guastalla to Luzzara of said Giulio, perhaps due to a sort of Italianization of Cremaschi-Cremasco, a phenomenon that was repeated punctually when other Cremaschi moved towards Luzzara and Mantua, an area in which the Caramaschi later they spread a great deal at the turn of the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. Cremasco and Cremaschi was then the surname of a branch of the family "da Crema-Crema" present in Guastalla (RE) already in the 1400s and in Mantua in 1100.
