Carcangiu is typical of south-central Sardinia, of Cagliari, Sadali, Villanova Tulo, Quartu Sant'Elena and Isili in the Cagliari area, of Serramanna and Sanluri in the Medio Campidano, and of Villa Verde, Genoni and Nureci in the Oristano area, it should derive from a nickname originated from the Sardinian term Campidanese carcangiu (heel, heel). additions provided by Giuseppe Concas CARCANGIU: calcàndzu, carcàngiu, craccàngiu, means calcagno and comes from the Latin calcaneum. It is above all in Villacidro (Medio Campidano) that they call the calcagno carcàngiu, while in Campidano we commonly call it carròni. But also for us accraccangiài means to give of heel, to trample with vigor. When the grapes were pressed in the traditional manner, the pigment was said to have just entered the vat: "Accraccàngia puru"! "Come on your heel"! In this case, a synonym of accraccangiài is accacigài:> from carcigare> probably derived from the Latin calcicare. In some parts of Sardinia, the Agropyrum repens = the caprinella or canine tooth is called su carcangiu longu, which we also call su cannajoni, infesting grass, enemy of the gardeners. Currently the surname Carcangiu is present in 90 Italian Municipalities, of which 44 in Sardinia: Cagliari 81, Serramanna 40, Sadali 37, etc. We didn't find it in the ancient papers we consulted.
