CASIDDU

Casiddu is typically Sardinian, from Sassari, Ittiri, Sassari, Uri and Alghero, with a stock also in Quartu Sant'Elena in Cagliari, it should derive from a nickname originated from the Sardinian term casiddu (bucket, but also beehive). additions provided by Giuseppe Concas CASIDDU: the word means hive. On the etymology of the term we have two hypotheses. It could derive from the Latin casa (house), to the diminutive box (small house, little house; or instead from qualus = basket, quasillum = basket. But in Sardinian the term casillu or casilloni, means container for milking, therefore for milk. But, sia is casiddus, beehives that is casillus, milking vessels were once made of cork, that is derived from the bark of the cork oak, therefore we suppose a common origin. It is good here to do an excursus: in Latin for arnia or hive we have cavea (Virgil - georgiche), which derives from cavum, hollow trunk, oak cork, etc. (see the surname Cau) .The Sardinian beehive is never cavu or cau, which means cable or also muèddu = marrow. Latin remains in the term marracau (logudorese) and its variant burucau (campidanese) meaning gruccione, in Latin apiaster, which is a small bird (the size of a blackbird), which feeds on insects and above all bees and it is therefore the enemy number or one of the hives. Marracau> marra cavum, which hoe (pecks) the hive; burucau> vurucau> vorocavum> that devours the hive. Currently the surname Casiddu is present in 20 Italian Municipalities, of which 10 in Sardinia: Ittiri 81, Sassari 32, Quartu 20, etc.
