CATTANEO

Definitely from western northern Italy and in particular from the provinces of Bergamo and Milan, in effect this surname is related, etymologically, both with the Cattani and with the De Capitani and the Capitanio, having in common the derivation from the position of Capitaneo. Various ancient records show traces of these families, in a letter from the Duke of Milan we read: "... Melchione et Bertho de Cataneis et consortibus ...", in 1534 we read: "... Mr. Augustinis de Cataneis seu de Moynis de Albio habitation in loco de Rippa sancti Vitalis ... "(see Captains). An important figure in our history is represented by Carlo Cattaneo, born in Parabiago in Milan in 1801, was first a seminarian, then abandoned his ecclesiastical career, took up classical studies and in 1820 became a teacher of Latin grammar at the Santa Marta gymnasium in Milan, in 1824 he graduated in jurisprudence in Pavia; started in 1848 at the five days of Milan, but opposed the possible Piedmontese intervention that he considered less modern and efficient than Lombardy and, above all, absolutely undemocratic and moved to Lugano in Switzerland. Elected several times parliamentarian of the Kingdom of Italy, he always refused the assignment in order not to swear allegiance to the Savoy; died in Switzerland in 1869. additions provided by Enrico Cattaneo During a genealogical study on my family, who lived from 1410 in Carnago in the Varese area, I found notarial documents attesting to the origin of the same from the conferment of the captaincy to a Lugano family the Carnavarys. The document states: "... Antonius de Carnavaris dicto Capitaneys ...". In the early 1500s his descendants, like the collateral branches (brothers) are named only Cataneis, the old surname Carnavarys disappears.
