CHIODA | CHIODARELLI | CHIODAROLI | CHIODI | CHIODINI | CHIODO

Bergamasco Chioda and the Piacenza area of Chiodaroli, Chiodarelli, very rare, would seem to have a stock in Mantua and one in Padua, Chiodi is widespread in the Po valley, with stocks also in the Marche, Abruzzo and Lazio, Chiodini has a Lombard stock between Brescia, Bergamo, Milan, Varese and Pavia, a lineage between Modena, Bologna and Ravenna and one between Florentine, Arezzo and Perugia, Chiodo would seem to originate from the Cosenza area, but with stocks also in Lombardy, could be originated from nicknames linked to the craft of manufacturers or sellers of nails, or, in some cases, linked to the toponym Chiuduno in the Bergamo area, but the most probable thing is that they derive from the truncated form of the Frankish name Chlodowig (Clovis). We find traces of this surname with the man of letters Johannes Baptista Chiodinus who lived between the second half of the 1500s and the beginning of the 1600s. Additions provided by Francesca Chiodo the Chiodos of the province of Cosenza originate from the Val Chisone in Piedmont, migrated to the island of Provence of Torano Castello; they spread in the rest of the province of Cosenza after having escaped the Waldensian massacre perpetrated in 1561 by the Marquis Salvatore Spinelli of Fuscaldo (CS).
