CONTERNO

Specific surname of the Cuneo area, in the area of Alba towards the Langhe, seems to have a strain also between Vicenza and Verona, integration by Luigi Colombo First of all the Conterno seem to me Piedmontese of the province of Cuneo. However, there is also a much less Veronese branch, which could come from an Italianization of foreign surnames: such as Kunter or Konter, but it is also possible that the German surname Gunter derives from an old Germanic name. Andrea Ferreri's integration is a surname that is familiar to me since it is the 1st in order of frequency in the municipality of Monforte d'Alba (Cuneo) of which I am originally from. From the archival research we carried out in the "Beata Vergine (Santa Maria) della Neve" parish in Monforte it emerged that the surname Conterno has been present in the municipality since the seventeenth century. It is one of the oldest surnames of Monforte, together with Zabaldano, Ferrero, Manzone, etc. The forms through which it has been recorded over the centuries are: Conternus, De Conternis, Conternis, Conterni, Conterno. The Conterno families of Monforte seem to have come from Monchiero (Cuneo), a small town once incorporated into Monforte. Although registers unfortunately do not confirm it, since the archives relating to the 16th century are practically illegible, we tend to refer to the origin of the surname, as already pointed out by Luigi Colombo, by a Germanic name. This hypothesis would also justify the existence of the Veronese stock of the Conterno family. Initially it was believed that the surname was based on the Cuneo toponym Conterno, a town of Monchiero. It seems instead that it was the surname that determined the name of the place and not vice versa.
