NUTRICATI | NUTRICATO

Nutricati and Nutricato are specific to Lecce, the first is typical of Ugento and Gagliano del capo, the second of Supersano and Santa Cesarea Terme, both should derive from a nickname originated from the Latin term nutricatus, nutricatus (nourishment), perhaps to indicate the medieval trade of the vivandiere or of the food vendor probably carried out by the progenitor, but it is also possible that they derive from the semi-dialectal term nutricato, which was used to define the agricultural buildings destined to the breeding of the silkworm, implying therefore that this was the activity of the family that is the knitter and the origin of the surname would then be much later.
