RUFFATI | RUFFATO

Ruffati, almost unique, it is probably due to incorrect transcriptions of Ruffato, which has a small stump in the Varesotto, but is typically Veneto, Padua in particular, Camposampiero, Santa Giustina in Colle, Padua, San Martino di Lupari, Campodarsego, Vigonza , Loreggia, Villanova di Camposampiero and Borgoricco, with a strain also in Venice and in the Venetian at Santa Maria di Sala, Dolo and Mira, and that should be a typical Venetian patronymic form where the suffix-ato stands for the son of, referred to the founders whose fathers had Ro called Ruffo or Ruffus (see RUFA). Traces of these cognominizations are found in Prata in Sondriese in 1600, where a certain Giovanni Ruffatto is quoted in an act as a municipal councillor.
