SAU

Typical Sardinian, distributed throughout the island, should derive from a nickname originated from the word Sardinian sau (wool thread) or even modifications of the Sardinian word sagu (blanket, covered, wool mantle), connected then probably with the craft of Founder. Additions provided by Giuseppe Concas SAU: Sagu in log. Ancient Sau in the log. Modern From the Latin sagum = Saio, or cloak of soldiers, or coarse and thick piece of wool: Sagum Sumerian (for soldiers) = stand ready for war. In some parts of Sardinia on Sagu or SAU is the black skirty in Orbace, under which are the white linen trousers, the traditional Sardinian costume; But in most of the island this skirty is known as SA Bràga (braca) or SA ràga. In the ancient Logudorese we find Sagu and Braca, as surnames-CSMS, XI, XIII sec. Chap. 30 (see more down to the entry, CSMS-Gosantine Sagu). In the Condaghe of St. Peter of Silki, CSPS, XI °, XIII th Century, in chapter 209, we find: Comporaili (a purchase) to Petru de Serra, Digiti Truncu (from the moaned finger),. J. Sollu de Terra (a penny of terra-Soldo Gold Sardinian) supra Custa ki Conporai to Travesu Catha, et ego deindeli. J. Sagu (and I gave him a "sagu" = blanket of wool, probably of orbace). In the Condaghe of St. Nicholas of Trullas, CSNT, XI °, XIII ° century, we find (at chap. 1 °): Comporaili to Petru Pulice Binia (a vineyard) in UNU Clusu ET Deibili (I gave him),. III. Sollos de Labore et tremissis (tremissis = one third of the Sardinian gold money). In the ancient documents of the Sardinian language and history we find the word, in the two exits, Sagu (oldest) and Sau as surname. Among the signatories of the Peace of Eleanor, LPDE of 1388, include: Sau Bernardo, Jurato ville Bitiri, * Bitiri... Destroyed village: of the Meylogu. Contrate de Ardar et Meylogu; Sau Georgio, Jurato ville Boon, * Boon. Bono (current). De Anella's curatorial; Sau Guantino, Villas Macumerii, * * * MACUMERII et Curatorie de Marghine de Gociano. Macomer etc.
