ARESTE | ARESTI

Areste, almost unique, would seem to be specific to Osilo in the Sassari area, Aresti, quite rare, specific to Cagliari, derived from a dialect nickname, in Sardinian aresti means wild, reserved, shy, according to some derives from the Basque name Aresti, but not much likely. additions provided by Giuseppe Concas ARESTI; ARESTE: wild, not domesticated; from the Latin agrestis. Here in Sardinia it is frequent as a toponym: acquas arestis = wild waters; terras arestis = uncultivated lands; referring to animals: su pisittu aresti = the wild cat. Referred to people, it takes on the meaning not so much of rude or coarse, but of timid, shy. In the ancient documents we find the surname among the signatories of the Peace of Eleonora, * LPDE of 1388: Arestis Paulo, ville Selluri (Sanluri - Seddori - ** (before the list of Sanluri signatories, the document shows: Et ego Capula Marcus .sindicus, actor et procurator ville Selluri.seu to Petro De Castay, capitulant locuntenente and Margiano Costa, potestatis locus naturist Selluri et omnibus habitatoribus dicte terre, congregatis X die januarii 1388.) Currently the surname Aresti is present in 67 Italian Municipalities , of which 25 in Sardinia: Sanluri 56, Villacidro 48, Cagliari 32, Iglesias 25, Carbonia 19, etc. Areste is instead present only in Macomer, with a single family unit.
