BARUFALDI | BARUFFALDI

Barufaldi, almost unique in Lombardy and Veneto, Baruffaldi has a nucleus in the Lecco area at Primaluna, in Mantua at Viadana and at Cento (FE), these surnames should derive from the medieval Germanic word beraufen in the broad sense of agreeing, to agree between two, we have traces of these surnames in Ferrara at the beginning of the eighteenth century: "..to rituale Romanum commentaria, auctore Hironymo Baruffaldo Ferrariensi, ..." (see integration by Massimiliano Fabbri). additions provided by Maura Baruffaldi The Baruffaldi family, very ancient in the city of Cento in the province of Ferrara, boasts a noble tradition of eight centuries; the events that have brought it to life still today are to be found in the eponymous lease of bishops and the allodial assets which it has enjoyed since the 13th century; the surname Baruffaldi has its origin in Cento, as evidenced by the great source of documentation that comes from the archive of the municipality of Bologna and the historical one of Cento, all documentation concerning the concession and sale of land between the bishop and some families among which mine. The documentation is vast and I myself, as a medieval scholar, have been able to consult it directly. This research led me to identify the progenitor, Baruffaldus Albrici son of Galvanus together with the brothers Thomax, Gandolfus, Albricus. This documentation refers to estimates made by the universitas homini Centi for the acquisition of land by the noble De Cazanemicis. These families were inserted within that magnatistic context that, a little for the episcopal grace and a little for the greater attention paid to the great magnates in the antimagnatizia era, were not affected by the repercussions that, for many other of them, had been taken on the end of the 13th century. Currently the most conspicuous nucleus is to be found in the Ferrara and Mantua areas. From the first centuries of the presence of this family in the Cento we witness a shift towards the north (city of Ferrara half of the fifteenth century) and towards Mantua. additions provided by Massimiliano Fabbri Regarding the quote on "Ad rituale Romanum commentaria, auctore Hironymo Baruffaldo Ferrariensi" such Girolamo Baruffaldi, Protonotary apostolic for the Vicariate of Cento descended, as all the Baruffaldis of Ferrara from those of Cento, I am proof of this belonging to that group of patrician families who, since the 13th century they enjoyed hereditary landed privileges which in fact constitute the incontrovertible element of their belonging to the people of Cento. Furthermore, co-option to the council and to the archpriesthood of the collegiate church of S. Biagio was the exclusive prerogative of the centric patrician families. Girolamo Baruffaldi was also the architect of the erection of Cento a Città by Pope Benedict XIV in 1754 bestowed following the analysis of the report prepared by the same Baruffaldi. From 1754 the collegiate church of S. Biagio, today the minor Basilica (John Paul II) is an archiepiscopal co-chair with St. Peter in Bologna. additions provided by Giovanni Vezzelli Baruffaldi is a Lombard surname that derives from the nickname 'baruffaldo' = seller of horses. Source: O. Lurati, 114. For F. Violi it is derived from the name of medieval craft barufaldus «sensale; mediator »passed on behalf of person.
