BERGONZI | BERGONZINI | BERGONZONI

Bergonzi has a decidedly Lombard and Piedmontese presence, Bergonzini, decidedly Emilian, is above all from Modena, but with presences also in Bologna and Ferrara, Bergonzoni, which occupies the same area, is however above all Bolognese, these surnames should all have originated , both directly and through hypocoristic forms, from the Germanic word berg (mountain), therefore indicating a geographical derivation of people coming from the mountains would therefore be an equivalent for example of Montanini. additions provided by Giovanni Vezzelli Bergonzoni - It is certainly the surname of the medieval personal name Bergonçonus, which appears in a Modenese map dated 13 April 1182. Bergonzini, closely related to him, is much more widespread than this surname in our area. The most plausible hypothesis is that both surnames move from a derivative in -one and in -ino of the Latin personal Ver (e) cundius, from the agg. verecundus «tempered; venerable ", soon entered also in the Christian onomastica, in strength of the African bishop Verecondio, flowered in the sec. VI and remembered in the annals of the Church. From the phonetic point of view the passage of V- in B- and the resolution of the link -dj- in -z- is normal, as happens in the local name of Piacenza Bergonzo, which is precisely a Ver (e) cundius, and in the local name reggiano Bergonzano (com. of Quattrocastella), which is a Ver (e) cundianus fundus. I can hardly think of a personal name * Bergundius for Burgundius from the Burgundian ethnic, when the Italian outcome of Burgundia is Burgundy and Burgundiones is Borgognoni. If then the original sound, represented by the -c- was deaf (but the current sound sound would remain a dilemma), we could think of derivatives of the Latin proper name Bregontius (CIL, V, 3729), which became * Bergontius for metathesis and for meeting with the Latin personal Bergonius (CIL, IX, 1644).
