BERLANGERI | BERLANGIERI | BERLINGERI | BERLINGERO | BERLINGHIERI | BERLINGIERE | BERLINGIERI

additions provided by Stefano Ferrazzi Berlangeri, unique, is found only in Platania (CZ), Berlangieri, very rare, is present above all in Campania, Berlingeri, in addition to the Calabrese stock, has also original nuclei in the north of the country, mostly in the Genoese, Berlingero, unique, is found only in Vallecrosia (IM), Berlingiere, also unique, is found only in Cosenza, Berlingieri is widespread especially in the Cosenza area, in the Neapolitan and in the Isernino, Berlinghieri has a greater lineage in the Messina area and smaller stocks even in the north, all these surnames lend themselves to at least two hypotheses concerning their meaning. A first interpretation makes them derive from the Provençal name Berenger or Bellenger, with the meaning of valiant fighter (some, however, believe that the name is of Germanic origin, formed by the terms beran, orso, and gaira, lancia, with the meaning, therefore, bear with a spear or bear's spear, in relation to the strength of this animal). Another interpretation instead makes them derive from the archaic Berlingiere voice (or from its variants), with the meaning of chatterbox, chatter: the origin of the term is to be found in the ancient French brelenc or berlenc (game table or dining table), from which the Italian Berlengo, of equal significance, is therefore the verb berlingare, that is, to chat, to gossip, so that the berlingiere is literally the one who chats a lot. Ultimately, these are then surnames derived either from the personal names of the founders or from the nicknames attributed to them. additions provided by Giovanni Vezzelli Berlingeri, frequent in Catania city and Berlinghieri in Messina city and province, as well as in Calabria, Salento and Naples. In 1158 a Willelmus Berlingerius is attested in Adernò. See Berlingiero in the Orlando Furioso that could have the ancient French bellengier = player to the dice, or the ancient Italian berlinghiere = chiacchierone. Rohlfs, 50.
