BONATI | BONATO | BONATTI | BONATTO

Bonati is typical of the western part of northern Italy, but mainly concentrated in the Milanese and Bergamo areas with significant presences also in Emilia and Liguria, Bonato is specific to Veneto, Trentino and northern Lombardy, Bonatti is widespread in the area which includes the Brescia, Mantua, Verona and Trentino regions, has strains in the Milanese, Varese and Como areas, in the Piacenza area, the Parmesan area of La Spezia and Carrara, and in the Florentine area, Bonatto, much more rare, is specific to Turin, should all derive from modifications of the medieval name Bonatus of which we have an example in this paper of 1531 in the Canton Grigioni to Brusio: "... omnes consiliarii dicte vicinantie de Bruxio et cum eis affuerunt hii infrascripti videlicet Bonatus filius quondam Iohannis de Gasparro, Petrus et Betinus eius fratres , ... ", in some cases derives from the Latin name Bonus past used also by the barbarian conquerors, Bono is also the Lombard name while the ce ppo bergamasco could derive from the toponym Bonate (BG).
