BUSCEMA | BUSCEMI | BUSSEMI

Buscema is typical of southern Sicily, of the Catania area, of the Syracuse area and of the Ragusa area in particular, Buscemi is specific to the whole of Sicily, Bussemi, almost unique, is probably due to a transcription error of the previous one, they are all surnames of Arabic origin deriving from the toponym Buscemi (SR) and its archaic form Bussema or Buscema. additions provided by Giovanni Vezzelli The surname Buscemi has a very high frequency throughout eastern Sicily. Comes from the Arabic: abu-samah = from the big mole. See G. Rohlfs: Historical surname dictionary in eastern Sicily, Palermo, 1984, p.55 additions provided by Stefano Ferrazzi On the origin of these surnames converge at least two hypotheses, which, added together, justify the high frequency in the Sicilian territory. On the one hand, in fact, it is quite probable a connection with the Syracusan toponym Buscemi, of undoubted Arabic origin (it should be a predial toponym). On the other hand, however, it must be said that in many cases these surnames derive directly from the medieval name Buscema or Buscemi, that is, the Italianization of the Arab personal Abu Shama, which can be translated as man by the new or by the desire (one of the many epithets, that is, of the Prophet Muhammad): in this context, in fact, the term shama refers to what Muslims call the Seal of Prophecy (Khatam An-Nubuwwa), which consists of a mole or a birthmark that Muhammad wore on the back, probably in the middle of the shoulders; according to an interpretation taken from the Bible, in fact, the Muslims believed that the Last Prophet would have distinguished himself precisely through a sign carried on his shoulder (the verse, taken from Isaiah 9: 6, quotes "a Child was born to us, we are given a Son: and the government will be on his shoulder "); for this reason, then, the shama that Muhammad wore at his shoulder was seen as the physical and concrete proof of His Election, the real Seal of Prophecy (to learn more, see the site http: // answering-islam. org / Index / S / seal_of_prophethood.html). As far as the surnames in question are concerned, therefore, these are the surnames or personal names of the founders or nicknames attributed to them (in relation to the Sicilian toponym Buscemi).
