CATTI

Surname of northern Italy. additions provided by Fabio Paolucci Catti is present in distinct nuclei in northern Italy, with intensity peaks in the western area in Lombardy, in Milan and in the Bergamasco, in Liguria and in Piedmont, in the respective regional capitals, and in Emilia. The surname should derive from the modification of the person's name Caterina (from the name of the obscure etymology Hekaterìne, thus reported in the Greek texts and therefore linked to the adjective katharòs, with the meaning of pure, and adapted to the Latin Katharìne). This name spread in the past especially in northern Italy with the cult of Saint Catherine (Hekaterìne) of Alessandria, martyred by Emperor Massimiano Daia (309-313) and venerated above all in the 10th, 11th and 12th centuries, and then with the cult of Saint Catherine of Siena (14th century) and other saints of the same name. Another hypothesis would link the surname Catti to the much more widespread Gatti, panitaliano, specific to Lombardy, Piedmont and Liguria, derived from the cat nickname, attributed to the progenitor in relation to the characteristics of the animal (cunning, cunning), or by the name of person Cat (originated from the medieval names Gactus and Hatto, the latter derived from the Longobard hatto, with the meaning of fighter).
