All very rare and specific of the Reggio area, should derive from a nickname generated by the Greek word megalos (large, thick, tall), originating from the imposing physical characteristics of the progenitor. We find traces of these surnames in the second half of the 1600s in Bovalino (RC) with Gioseppe Megali cited as a witness in an act.
