Absolutely rare, it would seem typical of the upper Como area, on the origin of this strange surname we can only make hypotheses, it could be possible that it derives from a dialectal nickname originated from the word piz zalĂ (in the high Como and Ticino cantons is common substitution of the s with the z) with the meaning of salted fish. additions provided by Giambattista Pizzala from my research shows that the surname Pizzala is a deformation of Pitz taller, that is coming from the Pitz valley [editor's note in German means valley and taller in Ladino is the valligiano], (the Pitz is a stream that runs through the Austrian valley of the same name, see Sankt Leonard im Pitztall). The surname was then transformed into Pitztal by the Swiss, later Italianized into Pizzala, when my paternal ancestors moved permanently to Italy, precisely in that of Civello di Villa Guardia, in the province of Como.
