Raineri has some strains in northern central-western Italy and one in Sicily probably originally from Palermo, Raneri has at least two strains in Sicily, in Messina and Catania and one in Trapani, Ranieri is Panitaliano. These surnames derive from the Italian medieval name Rainerius. Santo Rainerius Pisanus of the TWELFTH century is an important reference. From the diplomatic code Bresciano, January 1150 we read: "... Prepositus de ecclesia Sancti Petri in Oliveto, CEP appointments AC Vice Suprascripte ecclesie investivit Rainerium, filium quondam Rainerii qui dicebatur Paleaculi... " from which it is inferred to be the name Raineri already consolidated at that time also in the north. In Rome in 1119, at the time of Pope Callisto III ° in a list of priests and cardinals we read: "... Rainerius Abbas Sancti Basilii... ".
