Le prime tracce documentali sono del IV secolo dove un Flavius Ursus fù generale e Politico in Roma, nel IX secolo nella Historia veneticorum scritta dal campano Giovanni Diacono si può leggere: "...Stephani Candiani filius et Stephanus de Sabulo, Dominicus Faletri filius, Ursus Grugnarius, duo fratres Salbiani filii et multi alii, nomina corum ignoramus. ...". Numerosi autori della famiglia descrissero eventi e personaggi, attribuirono ad essa varie origini senza alcuna valida attestazione. La moderna critica storica ha, sulla scorta sicura dei documenti, fatto ragione delle artificiose ricostruzioni genealogiche di quegli scrittori che, per compiacente spirito d'adulazione, pretesero far discendere questa famiglia da nobili e antiche prosapie come quella di altre famiglie.
