BAZZICALUPI | BAZZICALUPO | BAZZIGALUPI | BAZZIGALUPO | BAZZIGALUPPI

Bazzicalupi, very very rare, would seem typical of Massa, Bazzicalupo, always very rare, it would seem of the Neapolitan and Caserta, of Giugliano in Campania (NA), Lusciano and Aversa (CE), Bazzigalupi and Bazzigalupo are probably due to errors in transcription of the previous ones , Bazzigaluppi rarely seems to be in the area between Milan and Pavia. additions provided by Stefano Ferrazzi Bazzicalupi, very rare, is originally from the Massa area, Bazzicalupo, more common than the previous one, has a greater lineage in the Caserta area and smaller stocks in the north of the country, Bazzigalupi, also extremely rare, seems to be from Pistoia, Bazzigalupo , unique, is found only in Genoa, all these surnames derive from the archaic term bazzicalupo, on whose meaning at least two hypotheses can be drawn, however very similar to each other. According to a first interpretation, bazzicalupo could derive from the expression to haunt the wolf or wolves, which, read in a metaphorical sense, should be understood as frequenting bad people, dealing with disreputable people: the verb bazzicare, in fact, often has a connotation negative (as appears, for example, from the expressions to haunt dangerous places or haunt bad companies) and the term wolf, used in a metaphorical sense, seems to assume here the meaning of despicable, abject, or even criminal (by association, of course, to characteristics of ferocity and violence that are often attributed to this animal, such as the fable and the popular proverbs often remember). The second hypothesis, on the other hand, considers the stem not as a verb (to be haunted) but as a noun, bringing its origin back to the ancient Italian haze: it is, in effect, a now obsolete term, but that once had meaning of compare, partner, to be understood in the sense of dishonest person or even of malfeasance, that is an individual who takes part in illegal or in any case ethically incorrect actions; in this context, the association of the terms bazzica and lupo, which seems to recall the figure of Compare Lupo, born within the fable as a symbol of arrogance, aggressiveness (it is often found in the company of Comare Volpe, symbol instead of cunning, of sagacity). According to both hypotheses, therefore, these surnames should derive from nicknames indicating the social reputation of the founders, believed to be dishonest men of malice.
