Brussolo is specific to the area that includes the Venetian, in particular San DonĂ di Piave, Eraclea and Musile di Piave, and the Pordenone area, in Sesto al Reghena, Azzano Decimo and San Vito al Tagliamento, should derive from an archaic Venetian nickname based on the term brĂ¹ssolo (cyprinus amarus), which corresponded to a freshwater fish with a bitter and bad taste, probably to indicate that the progenitor was a very minute man, perhaps with an unpleasant character. We find traces of the Brussolos in Portogruaro in the Venetian area since the second half of the 1600s, when we find them at work as millers.
