Caratelli is characteristic of Rome and province, of Sgurgola in the frusinatye and of Cori in the Latin, Caratello is unique, it could derive from nicknames linked to the word caratello (small wooden vase suitable for transporting fine wines or liqueurs), perhaps to indicate the good quality of the forefather, of this use we have an example in the second half of the 1600s in Pula (TS): "... Messer Zuanne from Curzola mariner of Patron Francesco called Caratello ...", but it is also possible that it is a hypocoristic of nicknames derived from the word caratto (see CARATTI).
