In 1859 he married Elvira Menicucci, with whom he had three daughters and a son (Dante, who died at the age of three and to whom he dedicated the dramatic lines of "Pianto Antico"). In 1906 he was awarded the Nobel prize for literature. He died in his home in Bologna in 1907. Giosuè Carducci was the son of Michele Carducci, a doctor, and of Ildeganda Celli. The paternal family was originally from Querceta di Seravezza (Lucca). The paternal grandparents were called Francesco Giuseppe Carducci and Lucia Galleni.
