CHIOCHIA

Very rare it is specific to Taranto, it could derive from the Spanish word chocho (fool, brontolone) even if it is unlikely. additions by Cristina Chiochia It is found in documents of 1600 on the noble weapons in Piedmont, but, it is said that Chiochia is a surname coming from Magna Graecia, when the first Greek colonists coming from the island of Chios arrived in Taranto and, following of doubling, they became Chios Chios or from the island of Chios. The documents instead date it back to the village of Costigliole di Saluzzo, where they were Nobili of the area, with a singular coat of arms: a shield split of blue and gold with two silver roses above the blue and one red above the gold. I found that: chiochiaro and chiochiero, which is a voice still alive in the popular (Neapolitan but ..) popular language, is a voice used to indicate the dull, foolish pumpkin goblin empty, usually accompanied by an offensive gesture consisting in making move the right and left hand forearm rapidly and alternately, keeping the right hand straight up with the fingers together so that the fingertip of the thumb simultaneously touches all the others; etymologically, rather than the Spanish chocho = molle, emptiness, it seems that it must refer to the Latin cochlea = shell, considered when it is emptied of its fruit, but it is not to be discarded the hypothesis that the word, since it is also used to designate the zotico villano, can be connected to the voice chiochia which is a variant of ciocia (a term from the unknown etymology, from the Lazio area used to indicate a particular type of footwear worn by peasants) to the item chiochia joining the typical suffix of competence aro / ero we arrive at our chiochiaro / chiochiero; however, the archaic Greek provenance with doubling remains confirmed by many.
