CHIRRA | CHIRRI

Chirra, absolutely rare, is typically Sardinian, Chirri, always Sardinian, is even rarer, almost unique, could derive from the Sardinian word logudorese chirra (herd of kids, but also covered), perhaps to indicate in the progenitors of the shepherds. additions provided by Giuseppe Concas CHIRRA: Sa kirra, in log., sa cirra in camp. it is the fence covered with branches to put lambs or kids in it. In central Sardinia the fence of the kids is called edìli or edàli; in the south of the island they call it s'ebiu, but it is certainly the wrong version of ediu; from the Latin haedus = kid. The word is derived from the Latin cirrus, with reference to the branches that cover the fences or kirras. Let us remember, however, that Chirra or Kirra or Quirra is the name of a vanished town, which was the capital of the homonymous Curadorìa or Parte di, in the judicial kingdom of Càlari first, then in that of Gallura. In 1288 it became a colonial possession of the Republic of Pisa. In 1324 it passed to the Catalan-Aragonese Kingdom of Sardinia. In 1317 Don Alfonso of Aragon established the County of Quirra. The first counts of Quirra were the Carroz and then the Centelles. With Cristoforo Centelles, in 1627 the county passed to Marquisate. In 1726 the Catalans and later the Osorios took over, until 1839, when the Marquisate of Quirra passed to the Kingdom of Piedmont and Sardinia. The Marquisate of Quirra is quoted in the text by Giovanni Francesco Fara "De Rebus Sardois - In Sardinia Chorographiam - 156/35". Today remains the beautiful Tower of Quirra, which stands on one of the most characteristic stretches of the coasts of Sardinia - see the Web - Il Castello di Quirra. The surname is present in the ancient papers of Sardinia. Among the signatories of the Peace of Eleonora of 1388, we have Chirras (de) Antiogho, ville Ecclesiarum. (Church Villa - Iglesias). Currently the surname is present in 42 Italian Municipalities, of which 22 in Sardinia: Lei 12, Macomer 11, Santa Giusta 9, etc.
