The family, although not able to boast of a nobility of feudal origin, was distinguished since ancient times for the high positions occupied at the court of the dukes of Massa and Modena. From Fivizzano Ceccopiri, n. on August 2, 1583, charged with affairs at the Holy See and always distinguished with the qualification of "very magnificent", a Pietro was born who was a man of Toga and Consul of Balìa, whose name was revived in a son born posthumously on 25 October 1650 which, having become a tax lawyer and consultant to the Duke of Modena, was ascribed to the Modena patrician by Rinaldo d'Este with a decree of May 2, 1730. Francesco had four children: Pietro, Alberigo, Lazzaro and Paolo Ambrogio. The first was Chamber Minister of the Duchy of Massa and butler of Maria Beatrice Duchess of Modena and Massa and Archduchess of Austria; Alberigo was the commander of the halberdier and also a butler of the said Princess; Paolo Ambrogio was a Piarist and rector of the college of nobles in Modena; finally Lazarus was in charge of affairs of the Duke of Modena at the Papal Court. Pietro in turn had a son, called Cosimo, who became Ciambellano and noble Guard of Duke Francesco IV and Podestà of Massa; his son Pietro was also Chamberlain and noble guard, and his children are the current representatives of this family. Since the beginning of the seventeenth century, the members of this family are found everywhere remembered as Counts and Nobles of Massa; these titles commonly occur in the letters and official documents addressed to them by the sovereigns and princes of the ducal houses of Modena and Massa and archducals of Austria.
